Unpacking the Baggage: Finding Divine Order in a Chaotic World

We’ve all been there — standing in the middle of a “foggy” season of life, wondering if we’ve lost the map. We carry bags filled with past mistakes, professional burnout, and the quiet anxiety of “what comes next.” We try to organize the chaos with logic, five-year plans, and sheer willpower, only to find that the heavier the baggage, the slower we move.
But what if the point isn’t to carry the bags more efficiently? What if the point is to unpack them and realize that even in the mess, there is a “God Thing” happening?
The “Boardroom” vs. The “Quiet Room”
In the professional world, we are taught to be the masters of our own destiny. We look at spreadsheets, analyze risk, and celebrate the “hustle.” I spent over 30 years in that world — founding investment banks and advising CEOs. It’s a world that values certainty.
However, the most profound lessons I’ve learned didn’t come from a successful IPO or a strategic merger. They came in the “quiet rooms” — the moments of prayer, the Sunday morning Bible studies, and the late-night reflections on scripture. I realized that while my MBA taught me how to manage a company, only my faith taught me how to manage my soul.
Recognizing a “God Thing”
A “God Thing” isn’t always a parting of the Red Sea. More often, it’s the “still, small voice” in the middle of a busy workday. It’s:
- The unexpected peace that settles over you when a project fails.
- The “random” phone call from a friend just as you were reaching your breaking point.
- The clarity found in a single verse of scripture that seems to have been written specifically for your Tuesday morning struggle.
We often call these coincidences. But when you start looking at life through the lens of divine providence, you realize they are invitations.
Unpacking the Fruit of the Spirit
When we talk about “unpacking baggage,” we are really talking about replacement. We take out the anxiety and replace it with Peace. We take out the bitterness and replace it with Gentleness.

I don’t write these words as someone who has it all figured out. I write them as a student who has been walking this path since 1961. My life has been a blend of high-level entrepreneurship and deep-level discipleship. After 50 years of marriage to my childhood sweetheart and decades of corporate leadership, I’ve found that the only thing that truly sustains is the wisdom found in the Word.
